RBI bank museum - a hidden gem in Mumbai

Hey everyone, I would like to talk about a museum I visited—the RBI Monetary Museum. It is a fascinating place that showcases old coins, banknotes, and historical documents. There was a huge variety of exhibits, and it was extremely interesting to see. Let me tell you more about this unique place.

Firstly, to get there, we travelled via Mumbai’s newly built underground metro, the Aqua Line. The metro station was just a few minutes away from our home. From Sahar Airport Metro Station, it was a 30-minute ride to Hutatma Chowk, followed by a short 5-minute walk to reach the museum.

Entry to the museum was completely free, although our phones were taken at the entrance. Inside, the museum displayed hundreds of varieties of coins. In the first section, we saw early forms of currency such as conch shells and beads. The exhibits included coins from various Indian kingdoms and eras, such as the Mauryan period, the Delhi Sultanate, the Mughal period, the British East India Company, and British rule.

The museum also showcased a wide range of banknotes, from old Bengali notes to even rare 10,000-rupee notes. I also learned about something called traveller’s notes. One of the most exciting things I saw was 1 kilogram of gold, which was really cool.

What surprised me the most was that the museum was completely empty. We were the only visitors there. Just imagine a museum filled with so much history and knowledge, with free entry, yet no visitors. It felt quite sad. If this place received more publicity, it would surely be crowded with people.

I strongly urge you all to visit this museum. Although the journey may be slightly tedious, it is absolutely worth it. So, the next time you have a free Sunday, do visit this place. You won’t regret it.
