The science of the impossible

Have you ever heard someone say that thinking about the impossible wastes time? These people probably say," What impossible, if it's impossible just don't think about it." Some say that there is a possible in every impossible, and that we should never give up. Well, Michio Kaku has taken this to another level, he has written a book a science on the impossible, and it is literally 303 pages, so much for something impossible.

He broadly defines impossibilities into 3 categories. The first one is a class 1 impossibility. It deals with impossibilities which seem impossible but are theoretically possible in physics. For example, antimatter exists in theory, but is impossible to acquire with today's technology. Some examples of class 1 impossibilities are force fields, invisibility Sheilds, teleportation etc.

A class 2 impossibility is a concept which is beyond our understanding of physics. One example is faster than light objects, we can travel faster than light but faster than light objects carry nothing. Another example is time travel, it is theoretically possible to travel in the future but practically impossible, and time travel to the past has not proven to be possible.

A class III impossibility goes against the laws of physics. A perpetual motion machine, or a machine that goes on forever, disobeys the laws of thermodynamics. Seeing into the future also violates the laws of cause and effect.

In the end, the science of the impossible is interesting. If you liked this blog, please by the 'Physics of the impossible' by Michio Kaku.

  1. Mansi here. Interesting to know. What “impossible” do you think you will see in your lifetime?

When I was a kid, if some one told me you can have a million books in your pocket.. or you can see anyone around the world instantly I would have said “impossible”!! But here we are!

  4. Hi Vivaan. Interesting topic. There is a lot that once seemed impossible just a few years back has become the norm today and that's thanks to inquisitive minds like yours. So keep asking the right questions and ordering the boundaries on curiosity. Looking forward to what that yields
