Education: need for renovation

Imagine a world where kids would be sad leaving school, and vacations and weekends were periods of torture and boredom. Where learning is fun and interactive. Our world is a gloomy version of this; school is boring and torturous, and learning is widely detested. This is the saddening saddening reality. But what if I told you that it is not the fault of ourselves, but the fault of the education system themselves.

The first thing we need to change are exams and tests. According to business.com, ^ students commit suicide in India because of academic failure. This approximates to about 2190 students per year in one country alone. There was a study done by IIT on exam stress. The study surveyed over 10,000 students from across India and found that 80% of students reported feeling stressed about exams, and 20% said that the stress was so severe that it affected their academic performance. Looking at this data, exams and tests( also causing stress similar to examinations) should be abolished, or at least not the primary source of adolescent success.

Another thing that should be changed is the way of teaching. Students these days learn no leadership or sense of commitment, as the teacher just gives homework, and we have to do it whether we like it or not. Learning has just become mindlessly memorizing, and there are a few leadership projects, but there is no freedom of topic even there. There should be a subject( 2 hours a week at least) where students develop their own projects. They should be able to research any topic, from supernovas to strings, Vermeer to the brie and more.

There is a school in the Netherlands called the Agora school. There, there are no curriculum exams or tests. Students have their own desks and multitudinous facilities to build their own projects. They learn but in a fun and efficient way. Even my very own school, Utpal Sanghvi Global School, is taking the initiative. I Ki Em is a competition run by our very own students. It was a success, demonstrating Indian culture, and will be held every year henceforth.

All in all, I feel the education system should change. I do not want to rebuke any institute, but I just wanted to express an opinion.

  5. Mansi here. The fact that you can identify these factors regarding education at your age is very insightful. In our generation we didn’t ask questions and just accepted the norm. But with such open thinking probably the world will undergo rapid (and much needed) changes in the way we approach education and its role in childhood.

  8. Hi Vivu, your writing skills, opinion and research are lovely! I love the idea of 2 hours a week to do any project that you'll like! However, a lot of schools have abolished exams in the primary grade. A school having no curriculum will not let a child explore himself in different topics and subjects. No exams will not make them competitive, which will be very difficult for them to cope up once they are thrown out to the world. Perhaps the style of exams can change, make it easy, less competitive! There should be an exam and project model that will only help you stretch your limits and push yourself to its full capacity
